Mind Shadows photography exhibit opens at Lycoming College Art Gallery in May

05/19/2017 - 07/22/2017
02:00 PM - 08:00 PM
Lycoming College Fine Arts Building, Fine Art Lecture Hall

Photographer Ralph Wilson explores how transparent personal thoughts are to others in his exhibit, “Mind Shadows,” in the Lycoming College Art Gallery in downtown Williamsport from May 19 through July 22. A reception will be held June 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Wilson’s exhibit addresses the struggles people confront as they try to manipulate the shadows their thoughts cast, which reveal, often unintentionally, who they truly are. Just as physical bodies cast shadows that define people as they pass through light, thoughts do as well, and are sometimes more easily seen by others than expected. People try to bury thoughts with stigmas attached to them and carefully manicure the perception others have of us in an effort to control how we are defined. Three collections make up a body of work that touches on depression and self-harm, defining moments and suppressed feelings.

Wilson discovered his fascination with photography from his father who owned a small town weekly newspaper in New York state more than 50 years ago. He studied at DeAnza College in Cupertino, Calif., with an emphasis on editorial and fine art black and white photography. He began his professional career in 1991 as a free-lance photographer with the Williamsport Sun-Gazette.

He has earned awards in photojournalism from the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association and the Associated Press. His work has appeared in USA Today, Time, Oprah Magazine and metropolitan newspapers throughout the country. His fine art photography has earned regional and national awards from numerous juried exhibitions.

He is the director of the Factory Works Gallery and the Williamsport Community Darkroom at the Pajama Factory in Williamsport, where he teaches black and white film photography and historic processes.
